"A SIGNIFICANT AND MOVING NOVEL." The American Jewish Congress
Part of the collection in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Follow the life of Brooklyn-born Zev Segal in the 1950s as he wrestles with the basic conflicts of man's inhumanity to man, why it occurs, and the legacy of the Holocaust. Laugh, cry, and grow angry as Zev struggles with conflict as he travels from the security and traditions of Orthodox Judaism to the gambling underworld, as the spirits of Jewish history haunt him. In "Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Zev," Marcus portrays God as giving his world over to two forces: The Laughing Angels, whose sole purpose is to torment and destroy all that is noble and righteous - and The Righteous Ones, who plead for God to never forget the most vulnerable amongst us.
Morton Teicher, Book Editor for The Jewish Floridian, compared Marcus to Chaim Potok.
"Having caused us to care about the characters he created, Marcus has done well in his first novel. We look forward to the next installment."
"Original and compelling." The Chicago Tribune
"An extraordinary book...that deals with the agony of morals." Dorothy Fuldheim, News Analyst, Scripps-Howard Broadcasting Company
"A significant and moving novel...An important addition to books about the Holocaust and Jewish people." American Jewish Congress
Controversial Author JERRY MARCUS is internationally acclaimed for his ability to create compelling fiction about thought-provoking issues such as anti-Semitism, political intrigue, and religious hypocrisy. Reviewers have called Marcus prophetic, provocative, masterful, compelling, original and creative - and even a heretic. Morton Teicher, Book Editor for The Jewish Floridian, compared Marcus to Chaim Potok, writing that Marcus “Caused us to care about the characters he created.” Whether he writes about politics, religion, sports, or murder - the underlying powerful theme in all Marcus' novels is how his characters constantly struggle with good versus evil.

Excerpt from Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Zev
It was four degrees outside and the Chicago wind was blowing ferociously. Zev Segal walked as fast as he could swinging his arms from side to side. His hurried manner continued for nearly a mile when suddenly Zev's entire appearance changed. He slowed up almost to a standstill, his arms no longer swinging, his shoulders now bent as an aimless look spread over his face.
Zev found a restaurant, checked the prices, and decided he could afford a cup of coffee. He sat at the counter, keeping his jacket on, trying to retain as much warmth as possible. Several minutes passed and the waitress still had not approached him. Zev rubbed his hands and moved his feet up and down. His body shivered more and more as each second passed. Finally, the waitress came over to him and he said very meekly, only coffee please. Zev's mind drifted. He pictured himself sitting in his furnished room thinking of all that had happened these past few years. He remembered the screeching trains going to hell itself. The Righteous Ones had asked Zev for his help in seeking out amongst the peoples of the world those responsible for the atrocities performed on the rebbe's family and millions of others. They still awaited Zev's answer and hoped their optimism now was more warranted than the time they sat at God's throne and thought the civilized world would never allow such horrors to happen....
